There are very few suspension components that have versatility such as the strut. A strut such as the BMW strut can serve as damper, wheel suspension, and body stabilizer. Basically, a strut is a combination of two different suspension components. The strut combines the shock absorber and the coil spring into one functional component. Instead of having separate suspension components such as in the case of double wishbone suspension, the strut combines the best of both worlds, so to speak. Struts are commonly found in vehicles with independent suspension system. However, bigger vehicles such as sports utility vehicles (SUV) still dominantly utilize separate suspension components.

In smaller vehicles such as sedans, station wagons, and coupes, the strut is becoming the standard suspension components. Even bigger vehicles utilize struts in the front wheels. Struts are more compact and versatile compared to the double wishbone suspension or the leaf suspension. Since the front wheels are used in steering the vehicle, these wheels need compact suspension units so that there would be lesser space required and lesser resistance. Nonetheless, struts can only compensate for relatively smaller amount of suspension loads. Most of the time, bigger vehicles require different types of suspension components. Structurally and functionally, struts have their limitations.

As the name suggests, the shock absorber absorbs the shock from impacts. A shock absorber operates based on pneumatic and hydraulic principles. The shock absorber part of the strut is the main shaft. It is a cylinder and piston component. Air fills a portion of the internal wall of the shock absorber. The remaining portion of the internal wall is filled with hydraulic fluid. The main role of the shock absorber is to cushion the force of impact. On the other hand, the coil spring counteract or neutralizes vibrations by storing their energy and releasing this energy afterwards.
