The Chevy oxygen sensor is a small device designed to be attached into the exhaust system of your vehicle. Its prime purpose is to measure the concentration of oxygen remaining in the exhaust gas. This data is sent as a signal to the vehicle's ECU in order to control the efficiency of the combustion process in the engine. On most vehicles, this sensor is located to the engine's exhaust manifold and does the job of determining whether the mixture of air and fuel is rich or lean. Rich mixture means that there is too much fuel content, while lean mixture means there is too little fuel. The oxygen sensor transmits this information to the ECU, for it to adjust the mixture so as to provide the engine the best possible fuel economy and the lowest possible emission.

The Chevy oxygen sensor converts the status of the engine's fuel and air mixture into a corresponding voltage signal that is sent to the ECU. It transmits live data about the proportions of the fuel and air in the engine to the power train control module. The data is used to calculate the fuel delivery of the engine which constantly changes as the engine is running. When the engine is running lean, the ECU will adjust the fuel/air mixture, increasing its concentration so that the engine will produce a productive output. Conversely, if the engine runs rich, the sensor will send this signal to the ECU, allowing it to perform the necessary adjustments.
