A brake caliper is what holds the brake pads against the discs when the brake pedal is depressed. The caliper is a hydraulically activated device containing at least one piston and two brake pads. A fixed caliper uses one or two pistons and is rigid. The floating and sliding caliper moves slightly to bring the outside pad and the rotor into contact.
One of the signs that the caliper mountings should be checked is when the car pulls to one side or the brakes grab. If there are loose or misaligned calipers in the mountings, repairs should be made right away. Another brake caliper problem is detected when the brakes make noise such as scraping, squealing, or clicking. This could be a sign that there are loose calipers, or that the caliper anti-rattle springs are missing.
