Master Cylinder

The master cylinder is the primary activator in the stopping of any vehicle. It is filled with hydraulic fluid that is activated when the brake pedal is engaged. Just a slight amount of pressure on the brake pedal results in a tremendous amount of pressure at the wheel cylinder or caliper pistons. This pressure causes intense friction between the wheel drum and brake shoe or between the disc and the brake pad, depending on the type of braking system.
The current master cylinders are a dual circuit with the separation of the front and rear brakes. This is a safety feature in case one of the systems should fail, the other will provide emergency stopping. Brake fluid moves as check valves respond to the action of the master cylinder piston. Fluid leakage is replaced through compensating ports. If the brake fluid in your vehicle is low, or if your brakes are not responding appropriately, you may need to replace the master cylinder.
